Participants are expected to understand on how to:
§ Accelerate the free cash flows into nearby time periods to the extent it is feasible to do so, because it is the present value of the free cash flows that determine shareholder value.
§ Make capital budgeting decision that will enhance the economic value of the firm and its equity shares.
§ Use the existing firm assets in ways that will maximize the cash flows that can be generated from them, and which are free to be paid to the investors.
§ Balance the cash flow generation potential of the firm against the risks that must be taken to achieve it. Investors know that some risk has to be taken to operate a business. However, they do not like management to take unwarranted risks.
§ Minimize the firm’ s cost of capital by designing an optimum capital structure
§ Choose an optimal dividend policy that will properly balance fund all worthwhile investment opportunities, maintain the optimum capital structure and satisfy shareholder preference for dividends versus capital gains.
Understanding the fundamental principles upon which these types of decision are based, participant will be better able to estimates a company’ s need for cash, how it is likely to raise funds, how effective its capital budgeting is likely to be from the point of view of enhancing the value of firm, whether or not its dividend policy is appropriate, and how effective its management is. These important elements that enter into the equity valuation process are the subjects addressed by corporate finance.
